Zendaya's Dune Costume Issues Appear Just as Severe as Arrakis' Desolation
Zendaya, known for her fashionable flair in Hollywood, often makes heads turn with her stylish and stunning appearances on the red carpet. However, her role as Arrakis-dwelling Fremen warrior Chani in "Dune: Part Two" required a level of discomfort that went beyond towering heels and haute couture armor.
During an interview with W Magazine (via Variety), Zendaya revealed the challenges of her elaborate costume. Despite being in good shape following her role in the tennis drama "Challengers", the "heavy and restrictive" wardrobe for "Dune: Part Two" proved to be a test.
Filming in Jordan was particularly difficult due to the intense heat. Zendaya recalls thinking, "Ugh, the bathrooms are so far away," as she had to hike to the location. If she needed to use the restroom, it would take at least 10 minutes to get out of the costumes.
This led Zendaya to be cautious about her water intake. She admitted, "I was like, 'I don't want to drink too much water.' I had a fear of peeing myself or ruining my costume on set. One day, I didn't drink enough and I had a heatstroke. I felt nauseous. I remember calling my mom from the bathroom floor, saying, 'I feel terrible.' She asked if I had drank any water, and I hadn't. I thought I was being smart, but that's not how it works."
Her experience mirrors that of Doug Jones, who starred in the critically acclaimed sci-fi film "The Shape of Water". Jones shared that he had to prepare for bathroom breaks before donning his suit, as he would wear it for 16-17 hours a day during filming.
So, if "Dune: Part Two" faces similar challenges with its costumes, maybe it's a good sign that it could follow in the footsteps of "The Shape of Water" and become a Best Picture contender.

In an anticipated interview with io9, Zendaya discussed the impact of technology on movie costumes, mentioning how the advanced materials used in her "Dune: Part Two" attire often malfunctioned, adding an extra layer of complexity to her on-set experience.
Amidst the numerous challenges faced during filming, Zendaya expressed her hope that the future of movie production would see improvements in costume design, aiming to prioritize comfort and performer well-being.
