Winter Getaways in Megève: A Luxurious Ski Destination
New Spin on Megeve Winter Getaways
I've been to Megeve a few times, and every trip has been different in its own way. So, I thought I'd share some tips to help you get the most out of your winter getaway if you're considering Megeve as your destination.
Car Hire or Private Transfer
In the past, we've usually opted for a private transfer, even though it's a bit pricier (around £120 per person). The allure of safety, reliability, and efficiency seemed worth the splurge. But this time, concerned about snow conditions, we decided to hire a car instead, shelling out £310 for the smallest rental option, which hiked up due to the New Year. Our recommendation: If there are only two of you traveling, go for a private transfer. For groups of four or more, rent a car.
Late December or Late January
We went over the holiday break (December 28 to January 4) this year, welcoming the New Year in Megeve style! Although the snow wasn't as great, it was still beautiful with enough to board. Yet, compared to visits in late January or early February, we encountered icy patches, grind noises, more expensive flights and accommodations, and fewer restaurant reservations. Our advice: The best time to visit is at the tail end of January. This way, you can avoid both Christmas and school holidays, have better snow conditions, and enjoy more dining and nightlife choices.
New Year's Eve Party or No Party
Living in Edinburgh, I've never felt the need to travel far for a New Year's Eve celebration. But we thought we'd give Megeve a try this time, and honestly, it was underwhelming. We spent the morning on the slopes before enjoying a few glasses of champagne at the Veuve Cliquot pop-up bar. Unfortunately, the private party that took over our chosen bar left us scrambling for alternatives. Our best bet ended up being the outdoor area of Le Bistrot De Megeve, where we sipped Pommery champagne and watched the fireworks. Our recommendation: Leave New Year's Eve plans to the last minute and be prepared for some spontaneity!
Dining In or Dining Out
Megeve offers a variety of restaurants, cafes, and creperies, both near the town center and scattered across the mountain ranges. Our go-to lunch spot is Les Javen D'en Haut at the bottom of the Petite Fontaine run, while Sel au Sucre on Rue Charles Feige serves delicious, budget-friendly pasta pots for just €7. When it comes to dinner, we've had great experiences at Le Vieux de Megeve, Le Bistrot De Megeve, and Tante Alice. Our advice: Try dining out a few nights, but also stock up on local deli food for a home-cooked feast.
Early Bird or Late Riser
My husband and I are early risers, usually the first on the slopes, but due to subpar conditions, we tried a later start one day. We discovered that the Petit Fontaine run frequently receives sun in the morning, with the day gradually getting brighter, while the afternoon becomes much busier as everyone waits for the sun to be in full glory. Our recommendation: The early bird really does get the worm (or winding, fir-tree lined slopes, in this case)!
Self-Catering or Hotels
I've only stayed in my sister-in-law's chalet, but there are some charming hotels located right in the town center, only a five-minute walk (or chauffeured ride) to the lift. Our top picks for hotels are Hotel M and Le Fer a Cheval.
Overall, the best time to visit Megeve is late January. This way, you'll miss the school holidays, enjoy improved snow conditions, and have a wider selection of restaurants and bars to choose from. Always remember to check current snow and weather updates before your trip!
For a luxurious travel experience that embodies both lifestyle and adventure, consider Megeve as your winter getaway destination. Incorporate a variety of activities into your itinerary, such as exciting days on the slopes and relaxing evenings sampling local cuisine at one of Megeve's many eateries, ensuring an unforgettable trip.
