Unveiling the Ancient Cilicia Trail in Mersin: A Journey Through History's Pathways

The Mersin Municipality has launched an exciting tourism and cultural heritage project, known as the Cilicia Trail. This 550-kilometer-long route stretches from Tarsus to Yeşilovacık, inviting nature and history lovers to explore the ancient landscapes of the Cilician region.
The trail follows ancient caravan routes and traditional Yörük migration paths, offering hikers breathtaking views as they traverse green mountainsides that meet the blue azure Mediterranean coast. The route is divided into four main sections, known as the Silk Road Route, Taurus Route, Olba Route, and Aphrodite Route, with a total of 38 stages.
Cilicia is the old name for this region, according to officials. The project aims to promote Mersin's social and cultural richness through nature and sports tourism, enticing both local and international visitors. To ensure safety and provide information, internationally standardized signage and panels have been installed along the trail. Each stage offers varying lengths and levels of difficulty, with trail lengths ranging between 7 and 27 kilometers.
Eylem Erem, director of the Tourism and Promotion Department, discussed the project's implementation in partnership with the Mersin Governor's Office and the Cilicia Trail Preservation Association. Ahmet Tarakçı, the project coordinator, shared that over 500 directional and location signs have been placed, using internationally recognized red-and-white waymarks to prevent disorientation.
The trail encompasses access to nearly nine ancient castles, with more visible if hikers venture slightly off the main path. Sections of the trail are suitable for hiking in both summer and winter, with proper gear essential for winter hikes in the Taurus region.
