Title: Giving Watto His Due in Star Wars' Latest Comic Series

Titled "Referencing the Past: Ren's Legacy of Vader Comic Series," this rewritten piece tackles the Star Wars-inspired topic of Kylo Ren's comic book series.

Title: Giving Watto His Due in Star Wars' Latest Comic Series

Star Wars comic books have a knack for answering questions that weren't exactly required, but they've excelled at it nonetheless. The past decade's revamp of the Star Wars continuity has been a goldmine for this, offering intriguing backstories for heroes and villains, weaving together different eras, and even throwing in a dash of silliness now and then. The latest example of this trend is the upcoming Legacy of Vader series, which is set to delve into Kylo Ren's past and potentially reveal the fate of an iconic character from the prequels - Watto.

Marvel's Star Wars comics are about to hit a turning point as they bid farewell to the High Republic era and prepare to dive into new territory, including a new volume for the mainline Star Wars book. This new series, slated for release in May by Alex Segura and Phil Noto, will be joined by two other comics. Jedi Knights, written by Marc Guggenheim and Madibek Musabekov, will explore the Jedi Order's brightest minds before the prequels, while Legacy of Vader, penned by Charles Soule and Luke Ross, will delve into Kylo Ren's story between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

It's in the latter series that we might get some answers about Watto's whereabouts. In a teaser from Legacy of Vader's second issue, Kylo Ren, possibly accompanied by Darth Vader's former attendant Vanee, is seen paying a visit to Tatooine. The official Marvel Comics editor, Mark Paniccia, posted some tantalizing previews on social media, hinting at a possible encounter with Watto. While it hasn't been confirmed yet, it certainly looks like our favorite Sand People slave master met a violent end at the hands of Anakin Skywalker.

If this is indeed Watto, it would mark his first on-screen death in contemporary continuity or even in the old expanded universe. Previously, Watto was only depicted as dead in the non-canonical Star Wars Visionaries comic anthology, where he was killed by a returned Darth Maul.

Fans of the Darth Vader comics at Marvel will savor this development as it neatly bridges the gap between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader's fearsome presence in the Original Trilogy. It also underscores Anakin's petty nature and flair for drama. In the prequels, Anakin's frustration at the Jedi Order's lack of action against slavery pushes him down the dark side. Years later, as Vader, he seems to relish the opportunity to act on his grudges.

The timing of this encounter is also intriguing. While it's not clear how long after Anakin's run-in with Watto in Attack of the Clones this takes place, it's safe to assume that Watto was still alive for some time after that. So, what changed? Was it a moment of anger, or was there a more complex reason behind Anakin's decision to seek revenge all these years later?

Only the Legacy of Vader series can provide answers. Until then, fans can speculate and theorize, fueled by the rich history of Star Wars and the intriguing turn of events.

In the future of Star Wars comic books, the Legacy of Vader series might provide insights into the technology used by Kylo Ren and potentially reveal the fate of Watto, as hinted by Marvel Comics editor Mark Paniccia. This series, set in the interim between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, could revolutionize our understanding of the Star Wars universe, thanks to IO9's coverage.
