The Second Installment of Batman's Adventure Experiences yet Another Postponement
You got a feeling when DC announced a release date for a Batman villain movie ahead of an actual Batman film that something was shifting. And now, it has. The Batman Part II, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, has been delayed another year. It's now set for release on October 1, 2027. Previously, it was scheduled for October 2, 2026 and also October 2025.
This delay news, as reported by Deadline, also brought some non-DC tidbits. The October 2026 slot will now feature a project directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu with Tom Cruise, while 2025 sees a few genre films rescheduled. Mickey 17, another Pattinson film, is moving up a few weeks to March 7, while Sinners, a Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan vampire film, is shifting back to April 18.
The delay of The Batman Part II wasn't entirely surprising. Chatter about the hold-up arose recently, with word that DC Studios co-president James Gunn hadn't seen a finished draft from Reeves. Gunn and his team were reportedly looking at a Batman villain film titled Clayface for release on September 11, 2026, before The Batman. When io9 asked Gunn about the timing, he appeared unbothered, explaining that Clayface and Reeves' Batman were in different universes. But now, it looks like Gunn's movie has a Batman-less path ahead as audiences wait even longer for Batman's return.
So, what's going on with The Batman Part II? Well, reports suggest that Reeves is being very cautious and meticulous with the script, and he's not moving forward until he's satisfied. This perfectionism, coupled with Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC and its Batman projects, can't have been easy. Originally, the plan was for Reeves' Batman to be part of an Elseworlds saga, with a new DC Batman appearing in The Brave and the Bold.
But this week, the film's director, Andy Muschietti, mentioned that he might be working on another project first due to delays. Add to that rumors suggesting a potential shift with Pattinson's Batman joining the DC Universe, and things get confusing. It's all speculative, but the wait for The Batman Part II could be as long as five years. And with a film like that, do DC and Warner Bros. really want to go a decade without Batman?
For now, Reeves and his team have another year to ensure we get the best Batman sequel since The Dark Knight. Let's hope it lives up to the hype. Each year-long delay only seems to dampen excitement and anticipation. At least we have The Penguin to look forward to.
