The recently constructed bridge in Scharbeutz has already garnered attention as a tourist draw
In the heart of Scharbeutz, a vibrant life is set to return as the town unveils its new seaside bridge. This long-awaited project, seven years in the making, was officially opened to the public, drawing thousands of curious onlookers who wanted to be among the first to cross the new bridge.
The opening ceremony was a special moment for Mayor Bettina Schäfer, who had accompanied the entire process. She considers the Scharbeutz seaside bridge the most beautiful of the three new bridges in Schleswig-Holstein. The bridge, a testament to the town's identity and the entire Luebeck Bay, is not just a beautiful place to enjoy fresh sea air and admire the view of the Baltic Sea, but also a symbol of unity and positive development in the community.
The new bridge cost 19.9 million euros to build, with the state government funding the project to 90 percent. The missing platform at the bridgehead will provide visitors with the opportunity to linger directly above the water in the future.
The Tourism Agency Luebeck Bay (TALB) organised a festival weekend for the opening of the new bridge, turning the occasion into a celebration. Pastor Johannes Höpfner blessed the Seebrücke and the people visiting it before the opening. The bridge serves not only as flood protection but also supports the preservation of the tourism industry and local ecosystem, emphasising a sustainable and cost-efficient model of coastal defence for Scharbeutz.
The new seaside bridge is part of an enhanced coastal defence and flood protection system designed to provide permanent and reliable protection against storm surges while preserving local infrastructure, nature, and tourism. The solution was a compact flood protection wall located about 4 meters behind the promenade, integrating into the beach wall with landscaping and planting to blend in naturally.
The bridge's construction took 24 months, and Schleswig-Holstein now has three modern seaside bridges in a row, with the Scharbeutz bridge being the third one completed. Burgomaster Anja Bendfeldt paid tribute to the old seaside bridge and expressed gratitude to residents for their patience during construction. Petra Kirner, Kreispräsidentin, emphasised the bold and forward-thinking decision of the municipality in building the new bridge.
Julia Carstens, Staatssekretärin, highlighted the project's potential for sustainable tourism through high-quality offerings. Renovating the old bridge was not feasible, necessitating the construction of a new one. The new bridge is located in Scharbeutz, a Baltic Sea resort, and the opening of the new bridge marks a significant step forward in the town's development and its commitment to preserving its unique charm for future generations.
