The Fifth Element is Set to Return to Cinemas Once More

There have been numerous significant reruns in cinemas this year, primarily due to 2024 marking various noteworthy anniversaries in film and pop culture. The newest flick to make a comeback to the silver screen is Luc Besson's classic, The Fifth Element, thanks to popular re-release distributor Fathom Events.

On November 17 (Sunday) and November 20 (Wednesday), the sci-fi epic will be screened once more in cinemas across the country for these two days. This is a continuation of Fathom's Big Screen Classics, which for this year, has already featured cinema classics like Blazing Saddles, South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, and The Wizard of Oz. According to Fathom, each screening of The Fifth Element will also include an introduction from renowned film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, delving into the enduring impact of this groundbreaking sci-fi tale.

Originally released in 1997, directed by Besson and co-written with Robert Mark Kamen, based on a concept developed by Besson when he was 16, the film features Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas, a 23rd-century Special Forces major turned taxi driver who is tasked with saving Earth by teaming up with a humanoid woman named Leeloo. Together, they must retrieve a set of stones to shield the planet against a cosmic evil that reappears every 5,000 years and employs human mercenaries to thwart their efforts.

The movie also stars an impressive cast, including Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker, and Ian Holm. Although not universally loved, The Fifth Element garnered several nominations at the 1997 Golden Raspberry and Stinkers Bad Movie Awards. Despite its mixed reviews, the film also won several awards at film festivals such as Cannes and the British Academy Film Awards, and went on to gross an impressive $263.9 million, making it the highest-grossing French film at the international box office until 2011's The Intouchables.
