The animated sci-fi spectacle, Daft Punk's Anime Fantasy "Interstella 5555," is set to return to cinemas for another screening.

Daft Punk might be taking a break from the music scene, but their iconic album, Discovery, is making a comeback this December in an exciting way. After 23 years, the electronica space opera masterpiece, Interstella 5555: The Story of the Secret Star System, is returning to theaters in its original, seldom-seen form.

The announcement was made alongside a new Interstella 5555-themed re-release of Discovery. This theatrical release of the film will feature a "remastered" (from the footage shown, it seems like it's been updated using AI upscaling, rather than a traditional remaster) version of the uncut, 65-minute film, returning to theaters for a one-night-only screening on December 12.

Originally released in 2001, Interstella 5555 was a result of a collaboration between Daft Punk and legendary anime director Leiji Matsumoto, known for works like Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999. Matsumoto oversaw the film, working alongside director Kazuhisa Takenouchi. Set to tracks from Discovery and without dialogue, Interstella 5555 tells the story of the alien pop band, Stella, Arpegius, Octave, and Baryl, who are kidnapped during a performance across the stars, transformed into a human band, the Crescendolls, and their eventual escape back to the stars.

The film served as the visuals for many of Discovery's music videos, but it's not often that you get to see Interstella 5555 as its creators intended. Alongside the complete film, screenings will include a selection of Daft Punk videos, directed by industry giants such as Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Seb Janiak, Roman Coppola, and Warren Fu. Tickets for this event will be available starting November 13. Hopefully, by then, we'll have more information about the nature of Interstella 5555's remastering.

In light of this resurgence of Daft Punk's iconic collaborations, IO9 readers can anticipate exciting discussions about the fusion of music and movies in the future. With the advancements in technology, AI upscaling could potentially revolutionize the way we revisit classic films, such as the remastered version of Interstella 5555.
