Stranded at Sea: A Ferry Mishap Near Rügen, Germany
Stranded Vessel Carrying 142 Passengers Experiences Grounding on Rügen Island
In a turn of unexpected events, the travelers aboard a ferry crossing the Baltic Sea between Hiddensee and Rügen faced an unanticipated delay. The vessel ran aground between the islands, and despite the initial rescue attempt, failed to return to its course.
The ferry, carrying 142 passengers and a crew of four, manage to navigate the choppy Baltic waters without any injuries, thanks to the calm sea conditions. However, the ferry's scheduled travel time extended by a whopping three hours as a result of the ordeal.
The German Coastguard relayed the news, with the Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) in Bremen confirming the incident.
Island Hopping: Rügen - Germany's Gem
The ill-fated ferry was navigating from Vitte on Hiddensee to Schaprode on Rügen through the Schaproder Bodden, a shallow lagoon separating the two Mecklenburg-Vorpommern islands.
Technical Misstep
The DGzRS attributed the grounding to a technical malfunction, specifically a faulty relay in the rudder system on the ferry, as reported by the shipping company. This glitch caused the ferry to deviate from its designated path into shallower waters.
Initial attempts to pull the vessel back onto course failed. However, a stronger rescue boat successfully towed the 40-meter-long ship back, ensuring its safe passage to Schaprode.
