Senior opera aficionado trails Thomas Hampson globally
Maren Deninger, an avid opera enthusiast, is preparing for an exciting trip to Paris in February, where she will witness Thomas Hampson perform in the title role of 'Nixon in China' at the Opéra Bastille.
Deninger, who is participating in the 6th International Opera Workshop in Waiblingen this year, has clear principles when it comes to opera visits. She never attends premieres and always secures a seat in the front row. To ensure a smooth experience, Deninger carries a pack of throat lozenges and a folded cotton cloth to discreetly muffle any coughs during performances.
The Canadian-born opera lover has a deep admiration for Thomas Hampson's performances. She finds great enthusiasm in his natural voice, flawless technique, captivating stage presence, wit, and ability to convincingly portray characters. Deninger's appreciation for Hampson is so profound that she made an exception for modern operas when it comes to his performances.
Hampson, an accomplished baritone, was initially drawn towards politics or law before a nun convinced him to take singing lessons. This decision led him to explore the German and French song repertoire, which has since earned him widespread acclaim.
Deninger has had the privilege of witnessing Hampson's performances in various cities, including Zurich, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, and Montreal. In 2008, she even published a book about his opera roles.
After the performances, Deninger looks forward to brief conversations with Hampson, which she values as a chance to gain insights into his artistic process. This Saturday, she will be attending his closing concert, eager to immerse herself in another unforgettable musical experience.
Deninger's parents immigrated to Canada with their eight children in the early 1950s, setting the stage for her lifelong passion for opera. Over the years, she has visited many major European opera cities and their houses, continually expanding her knowledge and appreciation for this timeless art form.
