Right Livelihood Award 2023 Laureates: Pacific Activists, Taiwanese Hacker, Sudan Volunteers, Myanmar Justice Fighters

The Right Livelihood Award, often dubbed the 'Alternative Nobel Prize', has announced its 2023 laureates. This year's recipients hail from diverse backgrounds, united by their commitment to climate protection, human rights, and peace. The ceremony will take place in Stockholm on December 2nd.

Among the honorees are activists from Pacific island nations, including the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC) and human rights lawyer Julian Aguon. They are being recognized for their groundbreaking work in bringing the climate crisis to the International Court of Justice. This marks the first time laureates from these regions have been awarded.

Taiwanese hacker and programmer Audrey Tang is also being honored. Tang's innovative use of digital technologies to strengthen democracy and engage civil society has earned her this prestigious accolade.

The Emergency Response Rooms volunteer network in Sudan is being recognized for its collective emergency aid to millions of people. This network has already received the Norwegian Rafto Prize for human rights.

The award also goes to the anonymous activist group Justice For Myanmar, which is exposing the financial support of the Myanmar military junta from abroad.

This year's Right Livelihood Award recipients demonstrate the power of collective action and resistance against authoritarianism and climate catastrophes. The award, given since 1980, continues to honor brave pioneers working towards a more just and sustainable world.
