Railways in Britain mark their 200th anniversary

In September 2025, North England will be a hub of excitement as it marks the bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway (S&DR), the world's first steam-hauled passenger railway. The celebrations, aptly named the S&DR200 Festival, will span a nine-month period across County Durham and Tees Valley, commemorating the railway's opening on September 27, 1825.

The highlight of the festivities will be the Bicentenary Weekend from September 26 to 28, 2025, at the Locomotion Museum in Shildon. This weekend promises to recreate the historic moment when the original steam-hauled passenger railway journey was undertaken with a newly restored replica of Locomotion No. 1 locomotive pulling the original passenger carriage, Experiment, along parts of the original route.

Friday, September 26, will see the replica Locomotion No. 1 departing from Shildon, accompanied by brass bands and street entertainers. Pre-booking is required for museum entry and viewing areas.

On Saturday, September 27, the exact bicentenary date, visitors can expect the Railway 200 exhibition train "Inspiration" to visit, along with next-generation rail vehicles on display, family arts and crafts, storytelling, and steam rides.
