Overcrowding Concerns in Renowned Bavarian Tourist Spot

The picturesque Schwarzach Gorge in Nürnberger Land district has become a popular destination for day-trippers, with a significant increase in visitors since the COVID-19 pandemic. This surge, according to Mayor Markus Holzammer, has been happening consistently since the onset of the Corona pandemic.

The digital age has made it easier for tourists to plan their tours around the Schwarzach Gorge, thanks to wander apps and websites. However, this convenience comes with a price, as it also attracts more visitors and exacerbates the problem.

Environmental officer Mareike Menneckemeyer explains that the increased visitor numbers are taking a toll on the Schwarzach Gorge nature reserve. More and more trails are being created by visitors who stray from the designated paths, causing damage to the delicate ecosystem.

The influx of visitors has negative impacts on the ecosystem, with trails being created off-path, thinning of the moss layer in crags, and uprooted or exposed tree roots. Visitors are not adhering to the rules that apply in a nature reserve, leading to these unfortunate outcomes.

In an effort to tackle overtourism, the municipality of Schwarzenbruck has implemented a protection concept for the Schwarzachklamm. Measures include installing more information boards at critical points, enclosing paths in certain areas, increasing ranger presence, and considering temporary closure of the gorge if these measures do not prove effective.

Campaigns like 'KlammMitRespekt' promote visitor awareness and responsible behavior, advocate for limiting visitor numbers through measures such as restricted parking and visitor guidance, and encourage public engagement in conservation efforts. The goal is to ensure that the Schwarzach Gorge remains a pristine and enjoyable destination for future generations.

Despite these efforts, the digital word-of-mouth advertising through media and apps has ensured that the situation has not improved since the pandemic. The challenge lies in striking a balance between making the Schwarzach Gorge accessible to visitors while preserving its natural beauty and ecosystem.
