Beholding the Milky Way: Top Stargazing Retreats in the Northeast

Got that itch to gaze upon the cosmos? You're not alone. Unfortunately, the densely populated and lit-up regions of the northeast U.S. might give you a hard time spotting the Milky Way, as approximately a third of the world's population, including about 80% of Americans, can't see it due to light pollution. But fear not, budding astronomers! We've collected eight stargazing paradises in the northeast U.S. and Canada where you can enjoy some star-struck moments.

1. Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania

A keen glance at a light pollution map gives a clear hint of darkness in northern Pennsylvania, a beacon of hope for stargazers. This resplendent circle houses Susquehannock State Forest and the heart of Clarion County, namely Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania, which offers some of the darkest night skies the eastern U.S. boasts. The park even has an "Astronomy Field" dedicated to sky-gazing, and the promise of numerous other vantage points for your celestial exploration.

2. Deep Sky Eye Observatory, Nova Scotia

Embark on a celestial adventure unlike any other by visiting the Deep Sky Eye Observatory in Nova Scotia, located about 20 miles from Yarmouth (just 3.5 hours via The CAT high-speed car ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine). Tim Doucette, a legally blind astronomer, opens the observatory, enabling visitors to lose themselves in the endless tapestry of the cosmos through the eyes of both man and space telescope. The observatory is North America's first Dark Sky certified location—a designation issued by the UNESCO-backed Starlight Foundation.

3. Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory, New York

If you're after the darkest skies in the region, fondly called the "black hole of darkness" by many, look no further than the Adirondacks in Upstate New York. In Tupper Lake, just west of Lake Placid, you'll find the Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory. This hidden gem offers free stargazing sessions, roll-off roof observatory viewings when the skies are clear, solar telescopes, an indoor planetarium, and guest lectures.

4. Bay of Fundy Coast, New Brunswick

The Cosmic Disk of the Milky Way

Stargazers are in for a treat in New Brunswick, situated just over the border from the U.S. A Dark Sky corridor is taking shape along the dramatic Bay of Fundy coast, with certified Dark Sky locations filling in the gaps on either side of the Fundy National Park Dark Sky Preserve. These include New River Beach Provincial Park, Irving Nature Park, St. Martins, Fundy Trail Provincial Park, and Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park. 5. Stargazing Cruises, Massachusetts and New York

Navigating light-polluted Massachusetts can prove challenging for stargazers. To make the most of your experience, consider joining a stargazing cruise. Providers like Stellar Events organize guided stargazing sessions on boats departing from Gloucester, Massachusetts, Sayville on Long Island, New York, and Galveston, Texas, from May through October.

6. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Maine

While Acadia National Park's skies are no longer as dark as they once were, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument provides an appealing alternative, becoming an International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2020. The national monument offers a more remote and peaceful stargazing experience than its more popular counterpart.

7. Grafton Lakes State Park, New York

Located just east of Albany, New York, Grafton Lakes State Park hosts astronomy events, including monthly Full Moon Hikes and the Star Party on May 23rd. Visit the Deerfield Pavilion to witness astronomers from the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers using telescopes and sharing their knowledge about the night sky.

8. The High Line, New York City

NYC is infamous for its light pollution, but you can still find glimpses of the night sky in certain tranquil spots. The High Line, an elevated park built on the former New York Central Railroad, offers a unique opportunity to observe constellations, planets, and Star clusters from the top deck of the park during twilight hours. Astronomical events are hosted every Tuesday from sunset to 30 minutes before park closure between April and the end of October, courtesy of The Amateur Astronomers Association. Other noteworthy NYC stargazing spots include Central Park, Floyd Bennett Field, Great Kills Park, Harriman State Park, and Columbia University's Pupin Hall.

May your gaze be ever skyward, adventurers.
