Murcia Removes 2,000 Unregistered Airbnb Rentals in Spain's First Region-Wide Crackdown

In a significant move, the Region of Murcia has successfully removed over 2,000 unregistered tourist rentals from Airbnb. This is the first time in Spain that such a comprehensive action has been taken in a single region, following an agreement between the regional government and Airbnb.

The initiative, launched in March, required all short-term rentals on Airbnb to display valid tourist registration numbers. Any listings without this information were deactivated. The regional president, Fernando López Miras, spearheaded this agreement.

La Manga, a popular tourist destination, was among the areas most affected by these changes. However, the move has led to a doubling of registered listings in the region. Many property owners chose to regularise their situation rather than risk losing access to Airbnb. The platform also ran an information campaign to assist hosts in understanding the new requirements and preparing for future European regulations.

The agreement between the regional government and Airbnb has resulted in the removal of 2,000 irregular tourist rentals in Murcia. This action promotes transparency and helps protect both visitors and local businesses. The region now boasts double the number of registered listings, indicating a successful effort to regularise the sector.
