Moomins Invade New York: A Tribute to Tove Jansson

Moomins Invade New York with Inaugural U.S. Exhibition

Get ready, New Yorkers, because the whimsical world of Moomins is coming to town! This summer, the Brooklyn Public Library's central branch transforms into Moominvalley with 'Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door Never Closes'. From June 28 to September 30, 2025, step into a magical realm filled with installations, archival materials, animations, and books that bring the Moomin universe to life [1][2][4]!

Tove Jansson (1914-2001), the female, queer artist behind this enchanting world, captivated both adults and children with her unique blend of painting, illustration, and storytelling. Her distinctive characters, similar in charm to Miffy and Snoopy, sprang to life in her first Moomin story, The Moomins and the Great Flood, published in 1945. These interesting creatures inhabit Moominvalley, exploring themes of adventure, nature, friendship, and courage [3].

The US debut of the Moomins exhibition will exhibit a life-sized Moomin house, showcase the evolution of the Moomins, and highlight their impact on theater productions, television adaptations, and musical interpretations [1][2][4]. It will also shed light on Jansson's groundbreaking career in political satire and her years spent living in the Finnish archipelago [3].

James Zambra and Thomas Zambra of Moomin Characters commented, "It's particularly significant to see Tove's work celebrated in a space that embodies her core values – curiosity, inclusivity, and the power of storytelling to connect people. We're thrilled to introduce US audiences to this intimate and multifaceted exhibition that immerses visitors not only in the world of the Moomins but also shares Tove's originality and remarkable life as a writer, artist, and pioneer" [1][2][4].

So, grab your tickets and join the celebration as we delve into the fascinating world of Tove Jansson and her beloved Moomins!

‘Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door Never Closes’ runs from June 28, 2025, until September 30, 2025 at the Brooklyn Public Library.
