Carnival and Royal Caribbean, two of the world's leading cruise line operators, are gearing up for an exciting expansion of their private destinations. With the cruise industry projected to welcome 37.7 million passengers this year according to Cruise Lines International Association, these developments are set to provide enhanced, immersive experiences for travellers.

Leading the charge is Carnival, which is set to open its new private destination, Celebration Key, on Grand Bahama Island on July 19, 2025. Spanning 369 acres, Celebration Key boasts over a mile of pristine white sand beach, a massive 275,000-square-foot man-made lagoon, the world's largest swim-up bar, and a 10-story sandcastle with two water slides. The island features five distinct portals designed to cater to different guest needs, such as a family zone, adult zone, and a private beach club.

Carnival is also enhancing its Mahogany Bay destination in Honduras, which will be renamed Isla Tropicale. Upgrades at Isla Tropicale include a large pool with a swim-up bar, a new private beach club, and an extension of the beach line to almost half a mile.

Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean is expanding its portfolio of private destinations with the upcoming opening of Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, expected in December of this year, and Royal Beach Club Cozumel, set to debut in 2026.

Carnival is integrating Celebration Key into its 2025 itineraries with more than 100 sailings scheduled to the new island from various U.S. ports, including Miami, Port Canaveral, Tampa, and New Orleans. The line is also enhancing its Caribbean presence alongside its return to Europe with new itineraries, demonstrating a broader strategy to leverage its private destinations for market growth.

Other cruise companies are also making moves in regards to private destinations. Disney Cruise Line has long operated its Castaway Cay private island, and last year introduced Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point in the Bahamas. Norwegian Cruise Line is adding new amenities and enhancements to Great Stirrup Cay, its private island in the Bahamas, which will receive a new welcome center, a new pool area with a swim-up bar, splash pad, and cabanas.

Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival, believes the company has a significant opportunity to monetize its private locales through targeted investments and increased marketing efforts. As the cruise industry continues to recover from the pandemic, these expansions and enhancements are poised to attract a growing number of travellers seeking unique, memorable experiences at sea and on land.
