Expansion of camping facilities in Halle progressing owing to scarcity of parking areas. - Insufficient parking spaces spur a camping initiative in Halle.
In Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, an influx of camper inquiries for overnight accommodations has prompted the expansion of an innovative project called "Got Room in Your Garden? Campers are Waiting!". This initiative invites locals to open their gardens or private outdoor spaces to campers, providing an array of unique, personalized camping options beyond traditional campgrounds.
The growing interest in camper-friendly accommodations can be attributed to demand arising from popular events such as Wave-Gotik-Treffen in nearby Leipzig and Halle, where camping spaces often fill up quickly. By broadening "Got Room in Your Garden?", more travelers with campers and RVs can secure convenient overnight stays directly hosted by locals, fostering community interaction and alleviating pressure on established campsites.
The city marketing department reported that they receive around 10 to 20 weekly inquiries for the project via email and phone. Currently, private campsites include urban courtyards in the city center and plots near Wallendorfer See. In addition, there are 13 public campsites, parking, and parking areas in Halle and its surroundings.
The campsite at the Tennis Club Sandanger is particularly popular, with more than 70 vehicles and around 140 guests counted during the first ten weeks of the season. Halle currently only offers two official municipal campsites, with a limited capacity of 26 caravan and tent pitches, highlighting the need for supplementary accommodations like these alternative campsites.
The "Got Room in Your Garden?" project, supported by the state, originally launched in 2023 and operates independently thereafter. Local residents voluntarily make their gardens available for visitors, following the principle of sharing, sometimes with a donation or in exchange for help with gardening tasks.
Tourism in Saxony-Anhalt has seen a significant increase in overnight stays on campsites, surging by over 46 percent compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.[1] This growth underscores the rising demand for affordable and intimate accommodation alternatives in the region.
With the expansion of the project, travelers are finding more accessible and appealing camper-friendly destinations in Saxony-Anhalt, reflecting the broader trend of sustainable and experience-driven tourism experiences sought by visitors[2]. This project complements existing campsites like Heide-Camp Schlaitz, which caters to visitors with additional amenities such as pools and parking.[5] In essence, the growth of "Got Room in Your Garden?" serves to expand capacity and promote regional tourism development while catering tocamper travelers' demands for convenient, unique accommodations in Halle.
