Rising Train Cancellations Persist in German Rail, Even Affecting Long-Distance Services - Increasing Train Delays Persist, Even in Long-Distance Travel with Deutsche Bahn

Train delays and cancellations have become more frequent in recent years, affecting both regional and long-distance travel operated by Deutsche Bahn. Green Party MP Matthias Gastel pointed out that the percentage of cancelled long-distance trips rose from 1% in 2019 to 4% in 2024, according to the Ministry of Transport (BMDV). In regional traffic, the cancellation rate reached 5% in the same period. Gastel highlighted that the infrastructure is in poor shape and demanded continued investments in its renovation.

Many train cancellations are attributed to inadequate maintenance and the late availability of vehicles. According to BMDV, over 13,600 cancelled trips took place in long-distance traffic last year, with over 60% of cancellations due to external factors. Strikes played a significant role, particularly in January 2024 during a wage dispute with the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL). In such cases, passengers usually received advance notice of cancellations.

Escalating Issues in Long-Distance Train Travel

While infrastructure is aging and requires significant renovation, management must step up its maintenance efforts. Gastel argued that they can't solely blame external factors for all train cancellations.

The Union party, however, has expressed doubts about the feasibility and effectiveness of the planned renovations for critical rail corridors, which mayioneer repeated issues in the foreseeable future. Throughout the years, sabotage and technical problems, such as faulty radio communications, have caused service disruptions.

Furthermore, high costs for modernizing the network and rising financing costs put Deutsche Bahn under financial strain, potentially leading to reduced maintenance and operational efficiency and resulting in more cancellations. Although predictive analytics and AI-driven maintenance are being implemented to improve safety and reduce service disruptions, the technology may not yet be advanced enough to fully address the scale of the infrastructure issues.

The significant role of strikes, particularly during a wage dispute with the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL), led to numerous cancellations in long-distance train travel in January 2024. Continued strikes could exacerbate the issue of frequent train cancellations and delays.
