Icelandair ceases direct flights between Hamburg and Reykjavik
In a recent development, Icelandair has announced the discontinuation of its direct flights between Hamburg Airport and Reykjavik, effective from October 25. This news was reported by the Hamburg Abendblatt, marking the loss of another airline on the Iceland route for the city.
The Hamburg-Reykjavik route has seen a series of changes in the past, with various carriers temporarily including the connection in their networks, only to remove it after a short operating period. Icelandair's departure marks the second airline to leave the route, following the ceasing of operations by low-cost carrier Play.
However, the attraction of Iceland as a holiday destination for German travellers remains undiminished. This is evidenced by the presence of ghrep, a carrier that currently operates on the Hamburg-Iceland route, offering flights to Reykjavik. Unlike some previous carriers, ghrep's operations on this route are not temporary.
Despite the appeal of Iceland as a tourist destination, the rising costs on the ground in Iceland have been affecting potential visitor numbers. Iceland has become one of the most expensive travel destinations in Europe in recent years, which is affecting booking numbers. This insufficient demand is believed to be the primary reason for the discontinuation of Icelandair's flights on the Hamburg-Reykjavik route.
A spokesperson for Hamburg Airport confirmed the loss of Reykjavik as a direct destination, expressing regret at the development. The city of Hamburg has been a popular starting point for many German travellers heading to Iceland, and the discontinuation of direct flights may pose a challenge for those seeking a direct and convenient travel option.
Despite this setback, ghrep's presence on the Hamburg-Iceland route offers some hope for German travellers, as Iceland remains an attractive holiday destination. For those planning a trip to Iceland, it is advisable to book flights as early as possible to secure the best deals and ensure a smooth travel experience.
