"We're inundated with inquiries, leading us to believe that we should offer much more," says Dunja Wetzl, who manages the "Talent Campus" at VHS Suhl. This program, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, enables children to participate in one- or two-week projects encompassing different facets of cultural education. It has been available in Suhl since 2013, drawing up to 60 children per week. This year, pottery and filmmaking are among the offerings.
"The most significant obstacle is staff capacity," sums up Wetzl. The annual application, execution, and accounting process for funding instruments consume an enormous amount of time, robbing hours elsewhere or resulting in extensive overtime. However, the positive social and interpersonal effects of the program are significant. Notably, it often serves as the sole means for children from disadvantaged families or those with limited cultural education to enjoy holiday experiences.
Without funding, such offerings would be nigh impossible. "An ideal scenario would see every city boasting a dedicated position focused solely on such funding projects," suggests Wetzl. Susanne Hohmann of Volkssolidaritaet Suhl supports this sentiment. "The issue lies in the continuous multiplication of bureaucracy," she argues, lamenting that a substantial portion of working hours would be swallowed by paperwork instead of being dedicated to the children.
Statistics from the Bertelsmann Foundation indicate that approximately 80,000 minors in Thuringia are at risk of poverty.
