Thrifty Vacations for Kids on a Shoestring: Exciting, Low-cost Outings for Children from Low-income Households across Thuringia's Cities

Travel deals specifically tailored for children from economically disadvantaged households - Government-funded holiday program for kids from underprivileged backgrounds

Want to shake things up and offer your little ones an unforgettable time this holiday season without breaking the bank? Look no further! Thuringia's bustling cities have a plethora of budget-friendly activities waiting to bring a smile to every child's face, without draining your wallet. However, heavy administrative red tape can hinder smooth sailing in many municipalities. To keep these budget-friendly experiences alive, support from funding, donations, and community initiatives is crucial, according to the folks in the know.

For example, check out Weimar's holiday pass – a lifesaver for families who can't afford a vacation getaway. Funded by the Weimar Citizens' Foundation's Children and Youth Fund, this pass is designed to bring local joys to children whose parents are strapped for cash. This year's lineup includes graffiti workshops, basketball summer camp, skateboarding classes, outings to fun spots, and more!

A desperate plea for more!

Amazing as they are, these budget-friendly activities are in high demand in cities like Weimar, Suhl, Jena, Gera, and Erfurt. In some places, demand far outstrips supply. It's not only municipalities stepping up – local clubs and other institutions also join the fray, providing free or low-cost activities. In Jena, for instance, participation fees for daily events hover between 1 to 2 euros.

Suhl's Tale: More is needed!

Suhl's situation exemplifies the challenges: Here, the VHS, the Family Center Suhl, the Volkssolidaritaet Suhl, and other providers offer holiday events. "We receive a ton of requests; we should actually offer much more," says Dunja Wetzl of VHS Suhl. Her "Talent Campus" program, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, gives children a chance to partake in one- or two-week cultural projects. Since its launch in 2013, this program has attracted up to 60 children per week, with activities like pottery and filmmaking on offer this year.

The Bureaucratic Beast: Devouring Staff Time

"The biggest issue is our staff's workload," Wetzl summarizes. Annual applications, implementation, accounting for funding, and more consume a significant chunk of staff time, squeezing out time for other tasks or leading to overtime. Despite this challenge, the program has numerous positive community and personal impacts, offering a unique holiday experience for children from families struggling with cultural education or otherwise unable to afford expensive childcare or travel.

The Bottom Line: All Kids Deserve Fun!

To make this a reality, funding is essential. "Every city should have a dedicated position to focus exclusively on such funding projects," Wetzl suggests. Susanne Hohmann of the Volkssolidaritaet Suhl echoes her sentiment, "The problem lies in the escalating and more complex bureaucracy." Much of the workforce's time would then need to focus on paperwork instead of engaging with the children, exacerbated by the shortage of skilled workers and the limited number of open youth positions.

Close to 80,000 children in Thuringia are at risk of poverty

A Bertelsmann Foundation study shows that around 76,770 Thuringian minors are at risk of poverty. These are children from families with an income below 60% of the average household income in Germany. Budget constraints and high living costs push many of these children towards state assistance to make ends meet.
