Germany's Travel & Tourism Sector Still Struggles to Recover

The sector's GDP contribution and jobs remain below pre-pandemic levels. International visitor spending is expected to lag behind in 2024. Collaboration is needed to boost international tourism.

Germany's Travel & Tourism Sector Still Struggles to Recover

Germany's Travel & Tourism sector is still struggling to regain its pre-pandemic strength. Despite progress, it has not yet recovered its full GDP contribution, jobs near me, or international visitor spending. The recent rise in airline passenger taxes is further hindering the sector's recovery.

In 2023, the sector's GDP contribution reached just over €453BN, still €13.5BN below 2019 levels. Employment grew by 5% to 6.18 million, but this was 248,000 jobs near me short of 2019 figures. International visitor spending remained €14BN behind 2019 levels, with a deficit of €14BN in 2023.

Domestic tourism has been a bright spot, with domestic visitor spending exceeding 2019 levels by €2.9BN in 2023. However, international visitor spending is expected to remain almost 10% behind 2019 in 2024, with a deficit of €5.1BN. By 2024, the sector is forecast to contribute almost €469BN to the economy, with jobs near me predicted to increase by 160,000 but still be 80,000 below pre-pandemic highs.

The World Travel & Tourism Council forecasts that the expenditure of foreign tourists in Germany in 2024 will reach approximately 33.1 billion euros. To fully recover, the German government is urged to collaborate with Travel & Tourism businesses to stimulate the return of international visitors.
