Volvo's China-Exclusive Luxury Van: The Volvo EM90 - A Spacious Home Away From Home
Gargantuan Volvo EM90 boasts luxurious cabin design
Step into the Volvo EM90 and you'll feel like you've entered an affordable hotel suite or your plush living room. With its 5.21-meter length, this angular giant is Volvo's first foray into the van market, tailored to China's growing preference for luxurious space travel. However, whether it will ever grace our roads remains uncertain.
The Volvo EM90 boasts an impressive array of features. Its skateboard platform, jointly developed with parent company Geely, utilizes a 116 kWh battery sourced from Zeekr's 009. This battery, combined with the vehicle's 800-volt architecture, delivers an impressive range of 738 kilometers in China's relaxed cycle, can charge up to 360 kW, and guarantees quick charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 28 minutes.
Despite its powerful battery, the drive might not impress speed enthusiasts. With 272 PS from the rear motor and 343 Nm of torque, the EM90 is more about luxury and comfort than breaking any land-speed records. It propels from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds, making it more than adequate for city driving where comfort and deceleration are prioritized over speed.
Inside, the Volvo EM90 delivers a distinctly Swedish ambiance—just as cozy and restrained as a premium furniture store. Seats are more comfortable than your living room couch, and the reclining chairs in the second row even massage you. Music, movies, or streaming entertainment are available on a screen that descends from the ceiling. Daydreaming, working, or simply enjoying the ride—everything is effortless with the touchstrips integrated into the doors.
Cargo space is ample, with 535 liters always available and a maximum of 2376 liters when everything is folded or made small. The rear bench is ordinary compared to the luxurious seats up front, but with a wheelbase of 3.21 meters, it's still roomy compared to most other Volvo models.
Although Volvo has not officially announced plans to bring the Volvo EM90 to Europe, the growing interest in luxurious limousines for lounging and standing within the European elite may change that. Competitors like Lexus and Mercedes have already introduced or considered similar vehicles, which could prompt Volvo to introduce the EM90 in Europe and steal the limelight from its rivals. Only time will tell if Volvo decides to roll out the EM90 in Western markets.
Until then, Europeans can look forward to other new electric vehicles from Volvo, such as the EX30 and ES90, as part of the brand's broader growth and restructuring plans.
