Exploring Kerala's Scenic Routes: A Journey Through Hill Stations and Coastal Landscapes
A group of adventurous drivers embarked on a three-day journey through Kerala, showcasing some of the best scenic driving routes the state has to offer.
The first day's drive took them from Kochi to Athirapally, a distance of over 60 km. The destination for the night was the picturesque Athirapally Falls, also known as the 'Baahubali Falls'. The group was treated to a breathtaking view of the waterfalls over dinner, accompanied by tea and pakoras.
The following day, the plan was to drive from Athirapally to Munnar, a distance of 130 km. The route led into the forest, and the phone network remained inactive, providing a serene and uninterrupted drive. The ascent to Munnar was filled with local buses, tourist vehicles, and narrow roads. The group's vehicle of choice was the Honda Amaze Manual, which offered good ground clearance and confident handling in monsoon conditions.
The drive included winding routes across the Ezhattumugham forest and alongside the Chalakudy River. A detour towards the Charpa Waterfalls was taken before heading towards Munnar. On the second night, a round of dumb charades was played among the group in the hotel in Munnar.
Day 3 of the drive included rolling down into Tamil Nadu and climbing towards Kodaikanal, a distance of 180 km. The Amaze Automatic was used for this leg of the journey, and although the CVT transmission was employed, it may not have been the wisest choice for steep ascents. The drive included the famous Gap Road, known for its tea plantations and scenic views. A stop was made at the Thottapura View Point overlooking the Sholayar Dam.
The final day of the drive was from Kodaikanal to Coimbatore, with the Honda Elevate being used. Despite the lack of navigation signals, the group decided to trust their instincts and continue the drive. No network was available beyond the Athirapally Falls, but the group managed to navigate through the journey successfully.
This journey through Kerala's scenic routes showcased the beauty of the state's hill stations and coastal landscapes. The Honda Amaze and City models were praised for their adaptability and comfort in navigating both the coastal highways and challenging hill roads. For those planning a similar journey, it is recommended to consider the weather (monsoon or post-monsoon is especially beautiful but challenging) and choose a vehicle with good ground clearance and reliable handling.
