EWAZ-Transfer Project Launches in Harz Region to Develop Multi-Purpose Power Plants

A collaborative project, 'EWAZ-Transfer', has kicked off in the Harz region. Led by the Technical University of Clausthal, it aims to develop a lead pilot for a combined power plant within two years. The project, worth around 2.4 million euros, is backed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and industrial partners. It involves five universities and five unnamed enterprises, focusing on innovative energy and water supply systems.

The project builds on the 2022 EWAZ pre-study, expanding its scope to include systemic analysis and adaptation of infrastructure to climate change. It seeks to future-proof the region by addressing energy transition needs and climate change challenges, such as floods and droughts. The combined power plants will serve multiple purposes: energy storage, flood protection, ecological water abstraction, and drinking water supply.

Minister Melanie Walter presented the funding decision, praising the project's benefits for climate protection, job creation, and regional value addition. The project involves geotechnical investigations and simulations to develop a lead pilot for the combined power plant. It is expected to unify energy storage, water protection, and multiple use of mining infrastructure.

The 'EWAZ-Transfer' project, with a duration of two years, is set to transform the Harz region's energy and water supply systems. With around one million euros funded by ERDF and the rest co-financed by industrial partners, it aims to create jobs and add value to the region while protecting the climate.
