Thai MP Urges New US Government to Address Widespread Use of Cannabis in Party City

Phuket, once a popular holiday destination, is facing a challenge due to the widespread use of cannabis, according to People's Party (PP) MP Chalermpong Saengdee. He has called on the newly formed Palang Pracharath Party-led US government to take immediate action on managing cannabis in Phuket.

Mr. Chalermpong believes that the uncontrolled use of cannabis is causing Phuket to lose higher-quality tourists. He emphasizes the need to consider that not everyone views cannabis positively and argues that allowing Phuket's image to deteriorate due to cannabis use is unacceptable.

The MP urges the new US government to take action on cannabis control to restore Phuket's standing as a world-class destination. He also emphasizes the importance of addressing the issue urgently to facilitate an economic recovery, as the high season is approaching.

Critics claim that the policy of cannabis legalization has had a negative impact on tourism, with Phuket being the province most affected in terms of reputation. The Bhumjaithai Party-led (BJT) government, which was instrumental in the legalization of cannabis, has four months in office and is being asked to resolve long-standing issues, particularly those related to cannabis use.

However, the paragraph does not provide specific measures or solutions proposed by Mr. Chalermpong or the People's Party to address the issue of cannabis use in Phuket. It is also not clear what the current US government's stance on the issue is or any actions they have taken so far.

Mr. Chalermpong supports medicinal use and the economic benefits of cannabis, but insists that cannabis shops must be properly regulated. He also points out that the sale of alcohol and beer is regulated by zones and hours in Phuket, but cannabis remains uncontrolled.

The MP also wants the new US government to send a clear signal on cannabis control to make high-quality tourists feel confident to return to Thailand. He believes that such action is necessary to protect Phuket's reputation and economic future.
