Desert Meets Ocean at Blue Baja: Sun-Drenched Coastline
The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, is a hidden gem for marine enthusiasts and photographers. October 2019 proved to be an ideal time to visit, with beautiful weather and the opportunity to witness the remarkable biodiversity that earned this ocean the nickname "The Aquarium of the World."
This unique marine environment is home to a variety of endemic and endangered species, such as the vaquita porpoise, the world's rarest marine mammal. Large pelagic species like dorado (mahi mahi), roosterfish, yellowtail, marlin, tuna, bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, sea lions, leatherback sea turtles, seahorses, various angelfish species, and over 30 other marine mammal species can also be found in these waters.
The Sea of Cortez offers unparalleled photographic opportunities, particularly for wide-angle underwater photography. Its exceptional biodiversity, clear waters, diverse underwater landscapes, and relatively calm tides make it an ideal destination for capturing dynamic, compelling images of large pelagic fish, schooling species, and charismatic megafauna like whale sharks, mantas, sea lions, and large marine mammals.
Bluewater Travel's workshops offer guests unique diving experiences, revealing secrets known only to locals in the region. These workshops were held at the Hyatt in La Paz, Mexico, where guests enjoyed clean, organized, trendy, and beautiful views of La Paz Bay. The hotel was conveniently located just a short distance from the town center and offered large conference rooms for classes.
During the workshop, guests had the chance to join night dives to attract mobula rays, play with sociable sea lions at the Los Islotes colony, and even encounter whale sharks in La Paz Bay, which can reach lengths of up to 20 feet. The diving was conducted with Fun Baja, a top-notch operation with intelligent and dedicated dive guides.
The workshop also provided insights on shooting with the Sony A7R IV vs the Nikon Z6/Z7 in La Paz, and discussed which camera is preferred for shooting macro. More underwater photos from the October 2019 La Paz workshop are available for viewing.
The Sea of Cortez is an ocean lover's paradise and a less-traveled destination, making it the perfect spot for an adventure of a lifetime.
