Delhi's First Nighttime Street Food Market Launches Next Week
Delhi's first dedicated nighttime street food market is set to launch in the next two weeks. Located behind Salimgarh Fort, near the Red Fort in central Delhi, the market aims to bolster the city's nighttime economy, showcase its vibrant street food culture, and boost tourism in heritage areas. Operating hours are from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The market will be managed through open and honest processes, ensuring fairness in vendor selection and rotation. Only 50 vendors will operate at a time, chosen from approximately 300 applicants. Vendors must adhere to strict licensing, cleanliness, and heritage preservation standards to ensure the project's legitimacy and longevity. Temporary structures like food trucks, vans, and kiosks will be permitted, with no permanent buildings allowed due to proximity to cultural monuments. The MCD will provide essential amenities such as street lighting, floodlights, drinking water, waste management, and parking space.
If successful, the project could be replicated in other parts of the city, further enhancing Delhi's nightlife and tourism offerings.
