Chile's national parliament provides room for life celebration ceremonies to take place

In the heart of Santiago, Chile, the National Congress witnessed a significant gathering on January 21, 2024. Pro-life events, organised in response to a draft law proposing to legalize abortion in Chile, served as a powerful manifestation of the ongoing national discourse surrounding reproductive rights.

The events were preceded by the screening of the Chilean production, "Amada (Beloved)", a film written and directed by Andy Matta. Based on real testimonies, the movie delves into the internal personal, ethical, and spiritual conflict that follows a decision to have an abortion, without focusing on the decision itself. The film's cast includes Camila Urizar, Fercol, Pablo Rodríguez, and Ana Domínguez.

Following the screening, the signing of the Commitment for Life document took place. Led by Member of Parliament Stephan Schubert, a lawyer vocal about his Christian faith, and supported by several organisations, the initiative aims to protect unborn life and address social concerns about liberal abortion laws. The document will be distributed to pastors and religious leaders in the country, as well as to the press.

The Commitment for Life document is endorsed by senators and deputies from different parties, reflecting a broader opposition to the proposed legal changes. Its signing will result in the inauguration of a pro-life parliamentary caucus on March 25, 2024. Each Member of Parliament will sign the document in a personal capacity.

The events at the National Congress are part of a wider trend of anti-abortion movements in Latin America and beyond. Pro-life groups often contest attempts to expand reproductive rights on moral, ethical, and social grounds, emphasising the protection of unborn life and raising concerns about potential social and cultural impacts of liberal abortion laws.

This opposition aligns with the conservative and religious opposition in Chile, which has been pushing back against the proposed legal changes. Chile, until recently, had stricter abortion laws, allowing abortion legally only under limited circumstances. A draft law introduced by President Gabriel Boric’s government in 2025 aimed to decriminalize abortion up to 14 weeks of pregnancy for any reason, marking a significant liberalization from previous laws.

The pro-life events in early 2024 represent part of a broader movement that reflects deep social divides about reproductive rights during a period of legislative change toward abortion decriminalization. As the national debate continues, the significance of these events lies in their role as a catalyst for further discussion and action on this critical issue.

In a poignant twist, Roxy, a character in "Amada (Beloved)", finds comfort in the transformative power of music after falling into despair. This underscores the film's message that even in the face of difficult decisions and internal conflict, hope and healing can be found.

"Amada (Beloved)" is not a religious film, but it carries Christian values, reflecting the filmmaker's personal beliefs. The film's release and the signing of the Commitment for Life document serve as powerful reminders of the ongoing debate and the importance of open dialogue and understanding in shaping the future of reproductive rights in Chile.
