Checks Essential for Vehicle Safety: Crucial Motorhome Inspections You Cannot Ignore
Embarking on a motorhome adventure can be an exciting experience, but it's crucial to ensure your vehicle is in top condition before hitting the road. Here's a comprehensive guide to the key checks recommended by motorhome travel blogs and RV experts.
Exterior Inspection
Secure windows, ceiling vents, and awning, retract and secure entry steps, stow folding chairs and outside items properly, check windshield for cracks or dirt, and inspect the roof, seals, and exterior for damage or leaks.
Electrical System
Test the house battery voltage (should be around 12.7V or higher), check and clean battery terminals, refill water if applicable, test shore power connection and generator operation, verify all lights (interior, porch, brake, turn signals) work, and inspect surge protectors, circuit breakers, and fuses.
Propane and Gas Systems
Inspect propane tanks and gas alarms for leaks or faults, and test all appliances using propane.
Plumbing and Water Systems
Test the water pump (should be off when traveling), check water lines, tanks, and drainage for leaks or blockages.
Tires and Chassis
Check tire pressure, tread, and condition, and inspect the chassis for any damage or loose parts.
Interior Checks
Clear countertops and stow loose items securely, test smoke and gas alarms for proper operation, have necessary documents, emergency contacts, and keys ready, and pack safety gear such as a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, jumper cables, and a flashlight.
Additional Tips
Pack necessary kitchen, bedding, and personal items to avoid supply runs, bring multi-tools, bungee cords, and cleaning supplies, and tailor packing based on weather conditions and travelers' needs.
Performing these thorough checks helps ensure your motorhome is safe, functional, and comfortable for your trip, minimizing risks on the road.
Remember, it's essential to check trailers, bike racks, and exterior luggage holders. Wheel bearings in the trailer should be greased, and if a trailer or bike rack is being used, check for loose bolts, fraying straps, and tread on trailer tyres.
If your motorhome is older, check the oil and water levels in the radiator. Covers on motorbikes should be checked for rips, holes, or damage. The tyre tread should be inspected, and if it is very low, it may be necessary to replace the tyres before a long trip.
It's recommended to book MOTs, tyre checks, battery checks, and other necessary checks. Don't forget to fix the GB Sticker to the rear of the vehicle.
