Cambodia inaugurates the development of a $2 billion Techo International Airport
The Techo International Airport, a $2 billion investment, was officially inaugurated in Cambodia on 9 September 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country's development. Located near Phnom Penh, the airport is designed by UK-based Foster+Partners, known for projects like London's Millennium Bridge and Apple Park in Cupertino.
In its first phase, the Techo International Airport is expected to handle 13 million annual passengers. However, upon reaching its full capacity, the airport is anticipated to welcome 50 million passengers per year, supporting Cambodia's position as a gateway in the region. The airport is intended to boost the country's tourism industry, strengthen economic growth, attract investment, foster diplomatic relations, and advance long-term development goals.
The interior design of the airport features warm tones and abundant greenery, creating a calming environment. The central hall resembles a tropical tree canopy, reflecting Cambodia's rich culture and nature. A notable highlight is the 181-metre Brown Coffee stand, designed by Phnom Penh-based HKA+Partners and featuring a sculptural art installation by Cambodian artist Sopheap Pich.
The financing of the Techo International Airport involved a consortium including the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The construction cost of the airport increased from the initially budgeted $1.5 billion.
The first commercial flights to use the Techo International Airport were an Air Cambodia flight from China and a Singapore Airlines flight, marking their inauguration. The Phnom Penh International Airport will continue to operate for military use or emergencies, despite being surpassed by the Techo International Airport.
The capacity of the Techo International Airport is expected to increase to 30 million after 2030, and by 2050, it is anticipated to reach 50 million passengers per year. The arrival of the first flights was celebrated with a Water Salute, a Chhai Yam cultural performance, and the presentation of special souvenirs.
The Techo International Airport is a joint venture between the Cambodian government and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corp. The airport is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Cambodia's economic and tourism sectors, positioning the country as a key player in the region.
