Biden Designates Two New National Monuments for Equity and Conservation

President Joe Biden has designated two new national monuments, Castner Range in Texas and Avi Kwa Ame in Nevada. These designations bring significant victories for local communities and equity in outdoor access, particularly for the predominantly Latinx community of El Paso and 12 Indigenous tribes.

The Castner Range National Monument in Texas was officially designated by President Biden. This beloved greenspace provides a readily accessible public land for the people of El Paso. It serves as a crucial habitat for various Chihuahuan Desert species, making it a cherished spot for both recreation and conservation.

In Nevada, Avi Kwa Ame National Monument was also designated. This area is culturally sacred to 12 Indigenous tribes and a critical habitat for numerous Mojave Desert species. The Biden administration's decision delivers on a promise made to tribal leaders in November 2022.

The Biden administration's designation of Avi Kwa Ame and Castner Range as national monuments represents a significant step towards preserving culturally significant lands and promoting equitable access to outdoor spaces. These designations ensure the protection of these areas for future generations.
