Austria's Climate Action Minister Launches €12M Mission for Climate-Neutral Cities

Austria's Climate Action Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) has emphasized the vital role of cities in combating climate change. Six pioneering metropolises have been chosen to receive €2 million each to bolster capacities and competencies for the 'Climate-Neutral City' initiative. This project, backed by the Ministry of Climate Action (BMK) and the Climate and Energy Fund, seeks to hasten the shift to climate-neutral urban areas through research and innovation.

The six pioneering cities are Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Villach, and St. Pölten. Each city will receive €2 million to devise strategies and measures for the energy and mobility transition. The focus of the initiative is on spurring innovation and research to accelerate climate neutrality.

The 'Climate-Neutral City' initiative, with its €2 million funding for each of the six pioneering cities, signifies a substantial stride towards Austria's climate change mitigation goals. By aiding cities in their transition to climate-neutral urban areas, the Ministry of Climate Action and the Climate and Energy Fund are promoting innovation and research that will benefit both the environment and the future of Austrian cities.
