Anticipate a 28-week delay for the sequel to the 28 Years Later film series
You won't need to endure a 28-year gap till the follow-up to 28 Years Later. In reality, it'll be approximately 28 months. Sony recently confirmed that the sequel to Danny Boyle's 2025 zombie sequel is set todrop on January 16, 2026. The film is titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and, as previously reported, it's directed by Nia DaCosta.
Let's simplify the figures here. In 2002, Danny Boyle and author Alex Garland collaborated on a zombie movie titled 28 Days Later. The film was successful, and in 2007, we received a sequel called 28 Weeks Later. The franchise went dormant for a while until Garland came up with a new concept. That film, 28 Years Later, is due for release on June 20, 2025, and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes. The trailer was recently unveiled and generated significant interest, leading to the digital re-release of the original.
28 Years Later was intended as the initial installment in a zombie trilogy. Consequently, Sony promptly hired Nia DaCosta (known for Candyman and The Marvels) to direct the sequel. It'll be the first film in the series to maintain the time span, merely adding a subtitle: "The Bone Temple," with the true meaning remaining a mystery. Details about part three have yet to surface.
Given the extended wait for these sequels, having the two films release just 30 weeks apart (approximately six and a half months) is quite thrilling. Such occurrences are rare these days (or even planned occasions, they often get scrapped). So we'll see how it unfolds.
No insights on the plot of The Bone Temple have been shared thus far, primarily because we're still figuring out the plot of 28 Years Later. However, there are rumors suggesting that original star Cillian Murphy, an Oscar winner and producer of these films, won't have a major role until the second film in the series.
