Annual Lavender Celebration Resumes in Hvar for its 17th Installment
The picturesque village of Velo Grablje, nestled on Hvar Island, is once again flourishing, thanks to the revival of its historical lavender production. Known as the "Lavender Village," this once-abandoned settlement has been brought back to life by local efforts and is now a must-visit destination during the annual Hvar Lavender Festival.
Velo Grablje's history is steeped in lavender, with the village once being one of the island's wealthiest settlements due to the production of high-quality lavender oil. However, over time, the village was abandoned, leaving only the vibrant lavender fields as a testament to its past glory.
The transformation from an abandoned village to a lavender festival hub began in 2003 when a group of locals decided to breathe new life into the area. They worked tirelessly to clean up the village, repair dry stone walls, and host the first Hvar Lavender Festival. The festival has since grown in popularity, attracting visitors from around the world who come to witness the breathtaking sight of the lavender fields in full bloom.

The 17th edition of the Hvar Lavender Festival is taking place from July 3 to 5, 2025. The festival begins in Hvar Town on July 3, with children's activities in Pjaca and Veli Đardin squares from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by an evening family circus show. On July 4, the festival moves to Velo Grablje, where the day begins with a traditional lavender harvest. The village fair features local products, workshops, presentations, lectures, and a variety of food stalls.
One of the highlights of the festival is the book launch, theater performance, and music program with a DJ that will take place in Velo Grablje on the evening of July 4. Admission to all festival programs is free, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for everyone.
