Airline Rankings in Europe: Many Poorly Rated Carriers Frequently Touch Down at Munich Airport

In the recently published Flightright Consumer Portal's Air Passenger Rights Index, Finnair has been ranked as the worst airline in Europe for 2025, with a dismal score of 2.48 points. Vueling and Ryanair follow closely behind with 2.52 and 2.58 points respectively.

These poor rankings are a reflection of various operational challenges and less-than-satisfactory services provided by these airlines. Finnair, which does not operate from Bavaria, finds itself at the bottom of the list, while several poorly rated airlines, including Lufthansa, Eurowings, and Discover Airlines (a Lufthansa subsidiary), do operate from Munich Airport.

Lufthansa, the worst-ranked German airline in the list, comes in 14th place overall in Europe with a score of 3.18. It performs poorly in terms of compensation for delays and cancellations. TUIfly, another German airline, ranks 16th with 3.23 points. Eurowings and Discover Airlines, despite being subsidiaries of Lufthansa, rank 19th and 20th respectively, still within the 20 worst airlines in Europe. Interestingly, Discover Airlines compensates well despite its poor reliability.

Munich International Airport, a hub for several of these airlines, has also been affected by these operational challenges. Airlines such as Lufthansa, Ryanair, Vueling, British Airways, KLM, Brussels Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and SAS are among those that fly from Munich Airport and have reported delays and cancellations.

Easyjet, KLM, British Airways, Wizz Air, Swiss, Turkish Airlines, SAS, and Swiss are also among the worst airlines in Europe. Notably, Condor, one of the worst airlines, has recently started flying to an inner-German destination from Munich.

In contrast, Eurowings and Discover Airlines, both members of the Lufthansa Group, are the best-rated airlines in Europe according to Flightright, with scores of 3.32 and 3.33 stars respectively.

Here's a summary of the 2025 Europe Ranking:

| Airline | 2025 Europe Ranking | Flies from Munich Airport? | |------------------|---------------------|----------------------------| | Finnair | Worst (1st) | No | | Vueling | 2nd worst | Yes | | Ryanair | 3rd worst | Yes | | Lufthansa | 14th | Yes | | TUIfly | 16th | Limited presence | | Eurowings | 19th | Yes | | Discover Airlines| 20th | Yes |

Despite these rankings, it's important to note that the situation can change, and improvements can be made. Passengers are advised to stay informed and assert their rights when necessary, especially when dealing with delayed, cancelled, or overbooked flights.

The dismal scores of airlines like Finnair, Vueling, and Ryanair in the Flightright Consumer Portal's Air Passenger Rights Index might be associated with their less-than-ideal lifestyle services and travel experiences. Airlines such as Easyjet, KLM, British Airways, Wizz Air, Swiss, Turkish Airlines, SAS, and Swiss, known for their poor rankings, are also often associated with difficulties and inconveniences during travel.
